ALBA Berlin has signed 17-year-old basketball talent Mia Wiegand from TG Sharks Würzburg. The defensive specialist joins Berlin’s youth system while continuing to play for Würzburg in the 2nd Bundesliga.

What exactly is happening with Mia Wiegand?

Mia Wiegand, 17, is leaving TG Sharks Würzburg after three seasons in the starting five. She is the third starter to depart in a short span — following Paula Wenemoser and Marja Wahl. Her strengths lie in rebounds, steals, and disrupting opponents in the paint. She remains with Würzburg through the end of this season but will officially represent ALBA Berlin starting next season.

Why does this matter for ALBA Berlin?

ALBA Berlin is deliberately building a roster of young, defensively dominant players. Wiegand brings rare athleticism, basketball IQ, and discipline. In the last 18 months, the club has signed only three prospects from the 2nd Bundesliga — Wiegand is the first with actual starting experience. Her 47% FG% and 38% 3PT% from last season make her a high-potential project.

What comes next?

TG Sharks Würzburg will replace her loss with three U18 players from their own academy. ALBA Berlin confirmed Wiegand will play for their U19 team in the Youth BBL next season. She’ll also train with the senior squad but won’t be activated in the Damen-BBL. Head coach Sandra Dijon has already labeled her a long-term option for the backcourt.

How is Würzburg responding to the loss?

TG Sharks Würzburg haven’t issued a public statement, but coach Lisa Kühn called it a "difficult but necessary step" in an internal meeting. The club insists Wiegand wasn’t sold — she was transferred into ALBA’s youth system. Würzburg retains transfer rights until she turns 20. Fans are disappointed but realistic — most understand she now has better development opportunities.
